when are we going to start talking about how weird and objectifying it is to say “a they/them”.
like seriously, i see this all the time. “my roommate is a they/them” is literally word for word something i heard in an instagram video just yesterday. in captions of posts and in tweets and all that shit people say “this is for the girls, gays, and theys.” i see people describing characters this way all the time too.
and i just. do you people not see how uncomfortable that is? to reduce a whole group of people to their pronouns?? not to mention how “people who use they/them” does not equal “nonbinary people” bc not all nonbinary people use they/them and not everyone who uses they/them is nonbinary.
idk it just really feels like another one of those pseudo-progressive Quirky Gen Z Internet Things that’s actually just not really progressive at all. it seems to be very heavily tied into how even though we’ve made good progress in deconstructing the gender binary, we’ve just created a new gender trinary where your options are girl/boy/they.
like. you guys can see how this isn’t actually helping very much, right?
